The Role

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, the Enterprise Architect will develop and sustain the long-term technology architecture strategy throughout the FT’s Technology organisation.

You will deliver enterprise-wide architectural direction, supporting the alignment of our technology investments, platforms, capabilities, and operating models to evolve consistently and sustainably. Partnering closely with Technology Directors, Product leaders, Principal Technical Architects, and Data teams, you will connect technology strategy with business priorities while balancing innovation, resilience, operational efficiency, and long-term maintainability.

The FT has a diverse technology landscape spanning editorial, subscription, commercial, data and enterprise platforms. You will maintain a strategic view across this estate, finding opportunities to simplify and modernise our technology and improve alignment across teams, domains and platforms.

This is a strategic role at the enterprise level rather than a solution or technical architecture position. It centers on technology strategy, governance, portfolio oversight, and organisational alignment, rather than the design and delivery of individual systems or programmes.

As a reliable consultant to the CTO and Technology Senior Leadership Team, you will help shape the future direction of technology at the FT.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain the enterprise technology strategy, target-state architecture and associated roadmaps, ensuring technology investments, platforms and capabilities support the FT’s long-term objectives.
• Maintain a company-wide perspective on technology platforms, products, services, and capabilities, evaluating major initiatives and investments in relation to enterprise architecture principles and strategic goals.
• Find opportunities to simplify, modernise and rationalise the technology estate, reducing duplication, technical debt, operational complexity and unnecessary cost.
• Define and uphold enterprise architecture principles, standards, and governance processes, chairing architecture review forums and guiding strategic technology decision-making.
• Work alongside Technology and Product leaders to transform business priorities into technology capability roadmaps, aiding the continuous advancement of the Product & Technology operating model and technology investment priorities.
• Offer architectural direction for key organisational, platform, and technology transformation projects.
• Provide strategic oversight of technology lifecycles, platform strategy, build-versus-buy decisions and major technology suppliers, ensuring clear approaches to adoption, modernisation and retirement.
• Ensure technology risks, dependencies, and architectural trade-offs are acknowledged and suitably addressed within the technology portfolio.
• Serve as a reliable consultant to the CTO and Technology Senior Leadership Team regarding technology strategy, architecture, and investment decisions.
• Build strong relationships across Product, Engineering, Data and Delivery functions, creating alignment around architectural priorities and strategic direction.
• Advocate for long-term thinking while balancing the practical realities of delivery and operational needs.
• Foster a culture of simplicity, collaboration, transparency and continuous improvement throughout the Technology organisation.

Required Skills and Experience

• Significant experience in Enterprise Architecture, Technology Strategy, Chief Architecture or a comparable senior architecture role within a complex digital organisation.
• A track record of developing enterprise technology strategies, target-state architectures and transformation roadmaps.
• Experience influencing technology decisions across multiple teams, products, domains and collaborators without relying on direct authority.
• Experience clarifying and managing complex technology portfolios while balancing strategic objectives with delivery and operational realities.
• Strong understanding of cloud platforms, SaaS ecosystems, enterprise integration patterns and modern software delivery practices.
• Ability to evaluate technology investments and platform choices from both technical and business perspectives.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to make complex concepts clear and relevant to technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leaders.
• Critical thinking combined with a pragmatic approach to delivery constraints and operational needs.
• Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills across organisational and functional boundaries.

Desirable

• Experience working across a wide technology spectrum covering various products, platforms, and business areas.
• Experience supporting the development of Product & Technology operating models.
• Experience delivering architectural direction through substantial organisational, platform, or technology change initiatives.

We currently operate a hybrid model which requires staff to work onsite 50% of the time, subject to role requirements & regular review.
