Don't search only for job titles

When looking for a new job, it is easy to search for a title like “Product Designer” or “Software Engineer”.

But you can also search for companies.

This can lead to opportunities you may not find through a normal job search.

Start with products you already use

Think about the tools and products you use every day.

Maybe you use a project management tool, a design tool, a developer platform, or a SaaS product.

Visit the company's website and look at its careers page.

You may find roles that are not easy to discover elsewhere.

Look at companies behind interesting products

You don't need to know a company name before finding it.

If you see an interesting product, research the company behind it.

Look at:

  • What they build
  • Where they are based
  • How big the team is
  • What roles they are hiring for

One interesting product can lead you to a company you had never considered.

Don't ignore smaller companies

Large technology companies get a lot of attention.

But smaller companies can also have interesting roles.

You may find opportunities with startups, SaaS companies, agencies, and growing technology businesses.

The job title may be similar, but the work can be very different.

Look at what a company is hiring for

Open positions can tell you something about where a company is focusing.

For example, if a company is hiring several engineers and product people, it may be building or expanding a product team.

If you see many sales and customer roles, the company may be growing its commercial side.

Job openings do not tell the whole story, but they can give you useful clues.

Build your own company list

Instead of only searching for jobs, keep a list of companies you find interesting.

Check them from time to time.

You may discover a good opportunity before you start actively looking for a new job.

Sometimes the best job search starts with finding a company you want to work for.
